Cheryl Cole: "THE" Style Icon?

This entry happens to be the piece I sent in for the competition, Young Journalist of the Year 2009:

Cheryl Cole, 26, is a highly admirable icon within the media. She has elevated her stance from living her everyday life in Newcastle upon Tyne, appearing on Popstars: The Rivals and consequently winning that and boosting her career to becoming a member of Girls Aloud: the most renowned girl band in the UK, even more successful than the Spice Girls.

Cheryl Cole started life just like you and I, a normal girl going about her daily routine. Over the years she has become incredibly famous, which has subsequently assisted in approving her fashion style. Not to say that Cole didn’t have her own variation of style before she was famous, but when these huge doors opened, she was given access to a vast amount of products which she would not have had the opportunity to entertain previously.

Being such a hugely stylistic person constantly in the limelight, it is not surprising that Cole is approached by many of the top designers, in order for them to promote their own work, with her help as such a respected figure.

One thing in particular, style wise, that stands out for Cole over other celebrities, is her personal awareness of what looks good and what does not. She knows and understands her own body shape, and thus this gives her the courage to flaunt and cover up particular areas of her body in order to really present herself in the best possible way. That said it is quite simple for anyone, including you and I, to point out fashion which does look good. The stylistic personality comes through when you can tell if these fashions look good and promote your own personal body shape.

Another reason Cole stands out from other style icons, is the fact that we have watched her rise to her fame, from the image of “girl next door” when she first appeared on our television screens, trying passionately to get the career of her dreams, to the sexy footballer’s wife, recognised in her own right for her talent and now her style. This in itself shows that it is not at all impossible for you and me to learn and improve our own knowledge of fashion for our wardrobes. While we may not have access to the most extravagant pieces created by designers, it has now become apparent that high street stores are now recreating a lot of celebrity looks at affordable prices. Cole’s style is imitated within many high street brands, allowing us to purchase and incorporate her confident chic appearance, without breaking the bank.

With every outfit Cole wears, she oozes extreme confidence. Just as the saying goes, “when a woman looks good, she feels great”. This is overtly demonstrated with her style. This, I believe, is the huge give away of someone with an excellent sense of style; if they are comfortable and content with what they are wearing, they are automatically confident. It is instinctive. This quality in itself is what every woman can replicate.
